Define a buildable assembly
Start with a drawing or a clear description of both mating devices. Mark the drawing revision and separate mandatory requirements from options that may be proposed. A connector photograph helps identification, but does not establish pin assignments or a complete cable specification.
Request preparation checklist

| Mechanical construction | Finished length and tolerance, branch lengths, breakout position, routing envelope, bend clearance, strain relief, jacket, shielding and marking. |
| Electrical or optical scope | Signal type, operating conditions, applicable impedance or fiber requirements, and the measurement conditions to be agreed. |
| Delivery and acceptance | Sample quantity, production quantity, labels, packaging, drawing approval, inspection records and an agreed acceptance method. |
Review and acceptance boundary
Treat a change of connector, conductor, fiber, jacket or length as a configuration change for review. Do not assume an existing certificate or test report covers the revised assembly. Identify who approves the first article before a larger order.
